mygooi launches gooimusic in India with Indo-Jazz concert

Abundance of talent reinforces plans to showcase world’s musicians on music channel, says creative director Jared Freiburg

CHENNAI, India (Aug. 31, 2015) gooimusic Creative Director Jared Freiburg and top music students from APL Global School performed at ceremonies to launch, in India, gooimusic, a music channel on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic).

The program, which also marked completion of a 10-day Jazz workshop conducted at the school by Freiburg for select 9- to 17-year-old students, featured four Tamil movie and music icons as Chief Guests:

  • Gangai Amaran, singer, composer, orchestra conductor. During the program, he sang in remembrance of recently deceased composer M S Viswanathan, who was responsible for the music for over 1000 movies.
  • Rajiv Menon, movie director and an expert in Indian classical music.
  • AVMK Shanmugam, music, movie and TV producer and grandson of Indian movie moghul AVM, who started the first South Indian record label in India during the 1930s.
  • Ms Suchitra, singer and disc jockey of South India’s most popular FM Station “Radio Mirchi,” who has sung in more than 100 movies.

Freiburg, dubbed by gooimusic Creative Board Chair Mohan Narayanan as a “Jazz sensation,” said, ”My trip to India – my first outside the United States – confirmed my belief in the widespread talent in musical genres all over the world. So, gooimusic will continue to seek talents and promote them so separate cultures can relate to each-other through music.”

The event included blessing the gooimusic venture and the concert by lighting two of the tall brass Indian oil lamps known as Kuthu Vilakku to drive out all bad things in and around the projects and to  bring all good things and happiness. The ceremony, Narayanan said, presents Hindu gods as light. The number of oil wicks represents the particular deity; for example a lamp with five splits of light represents Lord Shiva. Participants included the four Chief Guests, Narayanan, Freiburg, mygooi Chairman and CEO Paul N. Greenwood and gooidev President and Chief Operating Officer Steve Beaumont.

Working with Narayanan, 79, Chennai-based educator, composer and scholar on world music, the workshop created an Indo-Jazz theme song for the Indian government’s CLEAN INDIA campaign. Narayanan and Freiburg worked on the melody in Mohan’s 128 track digital midi studio, the first of its kind in Chennai. The lyrics in Tamil, the regional language of Chennai, were penned by Narayanan, who has many movie lyrics to his credit.

At the concert, Narayanan read a poem about Clean India written by Greenwood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwiVOZ3gzf4).

Freiburg said the workshop, which lasted two-hours a day for 10 days, was a great experience for him to learn as well as to display jazz opportunities to the students at APL Global. Freiburg said, “The best part for me was seeing some of their faces light up when they either heard jazz for the first time or made a connection to jazz’s relation to other popular genres like blues, rock and funk.” He taught the specially selected students the essentials of jazz while learning more about classic Indian musical themes.

“The music professionals I met had very kind compliments about the concert and seemed to enjoy it very much,” said Freiburg. “I see collaboration in the future.”

Freiburg, of Des Moines, Iowa, USA, is studying music education and performance at California State University, Long Beach.

gooimusic workshop to explore Jazz, South Indian themes

Creative Director Jared Freiburg, Advisory Board Chair Mohan Narayanan to headline program launching innovative music channel in India

CHENNAI, India (July 28, 2015)

gooimusic Creative Director Jared Freiburg will be conducting a 10-day music workshop in Chennai starting the week of August 3. According to gooimusic Advisory Board Chairman Mohan Narayanan, the classes will culminate with a public concert officially launching the gooimusic YouTube channel in India and introducing at least one original musical composition.

Also present for the launch will be Paul N. Greenwood, CEO of mygooi, and Steve Beaumont, President and Chief Operating Officer of gooi development (gooidev).

Freiburg is arriving in Chennai July 31.

gooimusic is the innovative music channel established by mygooi on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic).

“I’m looking forward to teaching these select students the essentials of Jazz, while learning more about India’s music,” said Freiburg.

According to Narayanan, a composer who is expert in musical themes from all over the world, Freiburg will also be meeting with leading South Indian classical musicians to discuss their music and the challenges of combining tonal elements from Asia, Europe, America and other parts of the world.

When Freiburg was named gooimusic creative director, he expressed particular interest in fusing traditional Indian music with Jazz, giving well-known Indian themes a more modern twist.

Narayanan said the APL Global School in the Thoraipakkam area of Chennai has selected a dozen students for the workshop, which will run at the school for two hours daily after regular classes. He said, “At the end of the workshop, Jared and I, along with the students, will have created a new Indo-Jazz theme song for the Indian Government’s CLEAN INDIA campaign. The theme song and other pieces will be performed by Jared and the students.”

The theme for the national campaign will be recorded and sent to the Indian Prime Minister’s Office as well as posted on mygooi’s facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mygooi) and on gooimusic. Narayanan said, “I have already started composing the song’s elements and am also writing the lyrics, which will be in the local Indian language, Tamil. It can later be translated into other major Indian languages.”

APL (Academy for Personalized Learning) Global School’s teaching addresses individual needs in a group context. Accreditation from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) allows APL to take its personalization to effective levels, preparing students for the Primary Progression Tests, Checkpoint, IGCSE and A level examinations.

New Yorker brings innovative violin to gooimusic

mygooi names Yut Chia to music channel’s advisory board

DES MOINES, Iowa (July 19, 2015)

Yut Chia, who gooimusic’s creative director Jared Freiburg says does things with a violin that have never been done before, has been named to the YouTube channel’s advisory board, Freiburg said. Samples of Chia’s work are available on gooimusic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_W0Jyz3in0).

gooimusic (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic) is mygooi’s disruptive and creative YouTube channel presenting innovative music from around the world.

“Yut is one of the most talented and professional musicians I have ever worked with,” said Freiburg. “His sense of musicality is unparalleled. He is a great addition to our advisory board because of his unique style of contemporary playing that goes beyond his considerable classical capabilities. He is becoming a notable source of entertainment and really encapsulates what gooimusic is trying to spread across the globe.”

Freiburg said he was introduced to Yut by mygooi’s Viral Development Officer, Johnny Krohn, who heard the New Yorker playing in a subway. “His talent was obviously gooi, so I was convinced I needed to play with him,” Freiburg said. “We got together early one morning and jammed.”

Chia, 22, plays as “Yut and the Hot Four.” “The Hot Four are the violin strings,” he says, “When I do a performance it’s different people, different set up, etc. We work hard to create amazing music, shows, etc. We love performing, and we plan on being one of the biggest instrumental groups in the world!” His Facebook page is www.facebook.com/YutandTheHotFour.

Chia says he seeks to make people interact with the music he plays. “When you go to a classical concert you have to sit down, be quiet. When I play, I want people to dance, feel free in clap in the middle of a piece, scream, basically feel the music and interact with it.
“The role of gooimusic is to spread amazing music like mine to all the people in the world and show them something amazing.”

While Chia’s music is strictly instrumental, he uses electronic back tracks and beats he creates. “I infuse Electronic Dance Music with the violin.”
Chia began playing violin by taking private lessons. After his first year, he self-taught for a few years before attending Queens College (City University of New York) to perfect his technique.

Hira Mustafa’s ironic, humorous videos join gooimusic

mygooi says channel is to include creativity across genres

DES MOINES, Iowa (June 24, 2015)

Short, humorous videos with unique cultural views, made by Hira Mustafa, are being added to the gooimusic channel, according to gooimusic creative director Jared Freiburg. The disruptive and creative YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic) will feature the young artist’s funny and ironic perspective on living in two cultures.

“We are highlighting spoken and comedy presentations as well as vocal and instrumental music, just as the Grammys do,” says Freiburg. “While we continue to grow the literal music of gooimusic, we are also exploring ways to support all forms of fine art including dance, theater, visual art and more.”

Mustafa, a classmate of Freiburg’s at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, “is just an excellent person, professional, creative and knowledgeable in her field,” he notes. “She brings forth great ideas tuned to our target audience. She helps execute pathways to success with her knowledge of other cultures and her varied connections.”

Mustafa, 18, is known for her six-second looping videos on LookWhosHira (vine.co/u/945393810068926464), her Vine Channel, but says she is looking forward to using longer formats for gooimusic. She is also a photographer (www.facebook.com/mustafaphotographywdm).

Born in Dubai, Mustafa lived in Karachi, Pakistan, until moving to West Des Moines when she was three.

“I’ve been the in between child of two very separate cultures,” Mustafa says. “I gained perspective on my Pakistani background and can appreciate the irony and humor of diverse viewpoints. I have fun while my comedy helps people understand cultural similarities and differences.

“An example of this: Often times, people ask me about having to get married off at a very young age. Although there are circumstances where this happens, it certainly is not the common path of a woman in Pakistan. I made a Vine of an American character asking me about it. Buzzfeed put it in one of its articles. My comedy shed light on the stereotype.”

Video is key to her vision, she says, since “everything is transferring to online. You don’t watch TV unless it’s Netflix. The majority of the audience is focused on online videos so gooimusic is the perfect place for my humor.

mygooi adds Indo-Jazz fusion to gooimusic playlist

Professor Mohan Narayanan named chair of channel’s advisory board

DES MOINES, Iowa June 19, 2015

gooimusic, mygooi’s disruptive and creative YouTube music channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic) has added tracks by Indian composer and music scholar Mohan Narayanan to its playlist, said gooimusic creative director Jared Freiburg.

The works, played by Narayanan, violinist Athira Krishna and pianist Amba Punjabi, combine traditional south Indian classical music with western Jazz and classical rhythms.

Narayanan, 79, will chair gooimusic’s advisory board, noted mygooi CEO Paul N. Greenwood. gooimusic is a subsidiary of gooi LLC.

“Mohan is well known in India for his fusion compositions, and movie and theater scores,” said Freiburg. “The scores draw on Indian tradition and Western themes – from Bach and Mozart to Jazz. And while he and his students have brought cross-over music to Germany, Austria, the U.S. and Canada, he has not received the international recognition his talent and accomplishments deserve. We’re looking to bring broader attention to his works through gooimusic.”

Narayanan’s works on gooimusic includes links to several short movies he has scored.

“The reach of your site…beyond imagination,” wrote Narayanan after his first video was posted on gooimusic. “It is not even four hours and the video has already 300 likes, means about x2 = 600 viewers. This is simply fantastic!”

In addition to being a composer and teacher, Narayahannis a technologist, writer of plays and novels, management consultant and professor for management studies. He founded Chennai, India – based Bhagyanjali Global Media (http://www.bhagyanjaliglobal.com/), which produces Tamil films.

Narayanan connected with world music during 10 years in Germany as a project manager and engineer with Siemens, working on the technology of music-harmonics, frequencies and chords. He has traveled widely (he’s currently on passport number 20) for Siemens Germany and the TVS Group India. When seeing films in countries including Poland and Bulgaria, while he didn’t know the language, he saw how music was being used. “I also collected music wherever I went,” he said.

Music has become a hobby that produced a sound lab that includes an archive of music, equipment and books, which he readily shares with interested students. It includes stacks of Andean folk music, Hebrew melodies, Irish chants, American Indian spiritual songs, Gregorian chants, music of Iran, Peru, China, Jazz, Classical, Indian; the list goes on. “You take any world music, any sound, I have it,” he says.

Composing “just for the hell of it,” he wonders how a raaga (a mode in classical Indian music) sounds with a piano? What Western chords support Carnatic (the classical style of Southern India) music? Where does harmony fit in Indian music? His answers to these questions are there to be heard.

Narayanan says he resents music being “over commercialized” or “monetized”. “Of course, money is important.,” he adds, “but there are some important things in life like religion, sharing knowledge, music, helping others etc. which should not be used just for the sake of making money.”

How MaxMyTV is set to change the way you watch TV

maxmytvheadTV is becoming an increasingly social two-screen experience. Who hasn’t watched a game while following the debate on Twitter or joined in a live-tweeting Sharknado event?

MaxMyTV is a new Kickstarter for a hub that brings social media integration directly to your TV. The hub is not just limited to social media but also brings sophisticated home automation and Android apps to your couch!

What makes MaxMyTV different from other multimedia/social media hubs like the Apple TV, Xbox One and Chromecast is the home automation features it has. When working together with MaxMyTV sensors the hub can:

  • create an automated home security system that will detect movement and send the pictures to you wherever you are
  • alert you to someone at the front-door with a live camera feed
  • monitor your power usage in the house
  • let you know where your pet is and when it’s making a run for the garden
  • secure your house when you’re out and detect when windows and doors are open

maxmytv

Like most stuff on Kickstarter this comes with an app so that you can monitor and control your smart home using your smartphone as well as your TV.

As it’s running on Android you have access to a huge library of apps and MaxMyTV promises to overlay detailed stats over the game so that you can keep up with action as it happens as well as getting your moneyball stat nerdery on.

maxmytvsport

There is no doubt that MaxMyTV has a lot to live up to, but they seem to be well on their way. Check out the demo videos on the Kickstarter page to see the hub in action.

If you’ve ever dreamt of owning a robot butler that will do your bidding with a suitable degree of robo-british snark then this may just be the next best thing. I’m assuming the Michael Caine voice module will be made available with version 2.0.

The Coffice: Party up front, Business in the Back

The Coffice, Stockholm

During my career I’ve had to learn that simply completing assigned tasks isn’t my most important job. Taking time to build networks and maintain relationships is at least as important. It’s one of those lessons you have to learn – no matter how many times you’ve been told.

Nowadays many workers are nomadic because technological innovation has enabled us to sever the chain that’s previously tied us to the office desk. No wonder networking has increasingly moved online and into the realms of social media.

According to a recent study, more than 50 percent of businesses here in Sweden (where I’m based), have employees that regularly telecomute.

Still, many of us want to be in the physical workspace, meeting others. At least some of the time! [Read more…]
