This She Wolf is One Dedicated Advocate
Shakira is best known for her musical and dancing successes – we’ll admit that we Agents of Goo have rocked out to “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Whenever, Wherever.” However, the Colombian artist has also made a name for herself as a humanitarian. Her charitable and advocacy work focus on global education and early childhood development. Shakira’s numerous accomplishments are outstanding, so we’ve compiled a short list of some of her most notable philanthropic efforts.
Fundacion Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation)
Shakira founded Fundacion Pies Descalzos in 1997. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to helping Colombian children in vulnerable and displaced communities through education, with schools being the center of community development. Through their Open Door School Strategy, the organization emphasizes Quality Public Education, Nutrition, and Life Tools for the youth, their families, and community members.
Shakira was also one of the founding members of America Latina en Accion Solidaria (Latin America in Solidarity Action). This organization advocates for the implementation of policies to help with early childhood development in Latin America and the Caribbean. ALAS urges governments, potential allies, and society to invest in this important cause to “ensure a country’s growth and development.”
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
In autumn of 2003, Shakira became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The artist has continued her advocacy for global education through this position, and has met with children worldwide to encourage them to follow their educational dreams.
