What do Pirates, Vampires, and Serial Killers Have in Common?

If you came here looking for a short answer to the headline: Johnny Depp is the answer!

We all know Johnny Depp as an eccentric, versatile actor – he’s played a suave (yet unsuccessful) pirate, a passionate vampire, a murderous barber, an odd candyman, a Mad Hatter, and an artificial intelligence researcher, just to name a few. Needless to say, Depp can act in an array of challenging, quirky roles. This phenomenal actor has always lived a life of goo, both on and off the screen.

Depp’s gooi Philosophy

The actor has no problem passing up roles on big budget films with nearly-guaranteed success, stating, “I was so uncomfortable being a product, I swore to myself I would cut my own path. Besides I could always go back to playing guitar or pumping gas.” Depp has never let the money blind him from his true passion of portraying challenging, unique characters with depth to their personalities. However, Depp always seems to impress his audiences, and the actor landed his first oscar nomination for his work as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Depp drew his inspiration for Jack Sparrow after Keith Richards, the gooi lead singer of the Rolling Stones.

Depp before Depp

Born in Owensboro Kentucky in 1963, Depp and his family lived in 20 different places by the time he was seven years old. The now famous actor began some questionable habits at a young age, including smoking cigarettes and doing recreational drugs. He eventually dropped out of high school at age 16 to pursue his dream of becoming a rock musician, starting with the band The Kids. Depp married Lori Anne Allison at age 20, whose career as a makeup artist allowed her to introduce Johnny to Nicolas Cage, a man who encouraged Depp to pursue acting. Though his relationship ended in divorce in 1985, Depp’s acting career was just beginning.

The Big Break

Despite his rocky adolescent years, Depp still managed to find success in acting. After meeting Nicolas Cage, Depp is introduced to an agent and lands a role in the 1984 film Nightmare on Elm Street. The actor quickly became a teen sensation when he earned the role of Officer Tom Hanson on the television series 21 Jump Street. However, Depp was uninterested in the role and eventually got out of a six year contract with the series.

Stop, Collaborate and Listen

When discussing Depp’s acting career, it’s impossible to ignore his work with eccentric director Tim Burton. The two first worked together when Depp played the title role in Edward Scissorhands. Depp and Burton would go on to work together in numerous films, including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows.

Continuing to Follow the Goo

Depp has seen continued success with nominations and awards for various roles, including J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland, Sweeney Todd, and reprised performances of Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor will appear as The Wolf in Into the Woods this December, as well as the title character in Mortdecai, which is scheduled to be released in January or February.

You Don’t Know Who I Am.. But I Am gooi

esq-liam-neeson-knife-0311-lgLet’s face it – Liam Neeson is gooi. There’s no argument here, just stating the facts. But, don’t just take my word for it, let’s review the reasons.

Before the fame

Before becoming a star in Hollywood, Neeson had been an amateur boxer, a brewery worker and forklift operator at a Guinness factory in Northern Ireland. Neeson got his first lead role in a play at age 11 – a role that he only agreed to take because he fancied the girl who was the costar.

Acting Career

Star Wars

Liam plays Qui-Gon Jinn. A Jedi Master, he was also the mentor of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not to mention a bit of a rebel with his philosophy of “feel, don’t think — use your instincts”, contrary to the beliefs of the Jedi Council. The force is strong with him.

Batman Trilogy

In Batman Begins & The Dark Knight Rises, Neeson portrays the evil super-villian, Ra’s al Ghul, which, fun fact, is Arabic for “Head of the Demon”. As a master of martial arts & swordsmanship, a ninja, & a snazzy dresser, he leads the League of Shadows – an organization bent on destroying all of Gotham.  He also TRAINED the Dark Knight himself, Batman.  This was after he orchestrated killing his parents – people who wanted to better the City. [dun dun DUN!]

In what is certainly his most quoted movie (for good reason), Neeson plays Bryan Mills, a retired CIA agent who has to save his kidnapped daughter from being sold into human trafficking. Interestingly enough, while the movie was a huge success, many people do not remember Neeson’s character’s name. Maybe his big speech should have been to the audience instead. “You don’t know who I am..”

The Lego Movie

While The Lego Movie is a kid’s flick, there is plenty of adult humor to make enjoyable for every age group. Neeson voices Bad cop, a Lego with a serious case of multiple personality disorder, one side is GoodCopBadCop_filmstill2good & the other bad, a play on the “good cop/ bad cop routine”. Neeson, being the amazing artist that he is, voiced these two characters simultaneously.  Check out the video here. He also voiced Pa Cop, father of Bad Cop.

Love Actually

In what could technically be classified as a rom-com [though I wouldn’t because it’s too good of a movie], Neeson’s character is a recent widower named Daniel, struggling to raise his stepson, Sam, on his own. He supports Sam who has decided that he will learn an instrument, join the band, & play in the concert at the of his school term – all to get noticed by the girl he loves.

Which is, as we know, exactly what real life young Liam Neeson did.
