Traveling? Here’s How To Avoid the Lines

The pre-flight ritual of standing in long security lines, removing your lap-top and taking off your shoes is getting a little bit easier.

Your Holiday Work Party Unwrapped

Staying Healthy in the Midst of Holiday Parties is Piece of Cake

‘Tis the season for holiday parties at the office! While these events are great for getting to know your coworkers outside of emails and away from the copy machine, they are also a death trap for whatever is left of your summer diet. Staying healthy over the holidays can be a challenge, here’s help.

Potlucks are filled with unhealthy snacks. But they’re so delicious that even we Agents of Goo fall victim to their temptations! So what would it take to counteract the unwanted results from these popular goodies? We’ve compiled a list of party food recipes common over here in the States, and the ways you can look out for your health and shed some of the extra weight without feeling too much of a burn.

  1. Chewy Sugar Cookies – Gale Gand

What’s a holiday party without sugar cookies? This recipe is hard to avoid with the combination of easy preparation and a perfectly soft end-result. Have you eaten one (or two, or three…) too many? Build a giant snowman to burn off those extra sugars!

  2. Scotcharoos – allrecipes.com

Scotcharoos have to be one of my favorite party treats of all time. Consequently, I hear them calling my name at a party and end up eating too many of them. If you have the same problem that I do, play a game of ice or roller hockey to combat the calories.

  3. Buffet Meatballs – Taste of Home

Whether they’re meatballs or little smokies, these hors d’oeuvres are practically guaranteed to be at every holiday party you attend. And why wouldn’t they be? They’re super easy to make (and you already learned how much I love my slow cooker). However, it’s easy to fill your plate with these deceiving little guys – and when a serving of only three meatballs is 160+ calories, you’re looking at a quick way to rack up your caloric intake. But no need to fret, you can burn some of that off by playing a game of basketball.

  4. Hot Spinach and Artichoke Dip – Alton Brown

Serve this delicious appetizer with a warm baguette and your coworkers will thank you. The ooey goodness of this dip makes it nearly impossible to keep from inhaling the whole dish. Scrub, vacuum, and declutter your way back to your pre-Spin Dip weight. While you’re at it, spread some holiday cheer by donating your unused clothes and household items to a local charity.

  5. Buffalo Chicken Dip – Claire Robinson

This is another dip that is a must-have at parties. The buffalo sauce brings the perfect amount of heat and is balanced by the cream cheese and bleu cheese. If you’re like me and have had more scoops than you should, get active by having a snowball fight with your family.

  6. Outrageous Brownies – Ina Garten

A party isn’t a party without brownies! While they may not be everyone’s kryptonite, the fudgey goodness is certainly dangerous to my (attempted) healthy diet. A winter hike may be the answer should you devour a few too many.

  7. Chex® Muddy Buddies® – Betty Crocker

Muddy Buddies, Puppy Chow, whatever you choose to call it, is addictive! Who could resist the combination of peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar? It’s easy to lose track of how many handfuls you’ve had of this delicious snack. To counteract the adverse effects, grab a friend and go ice skating at your local rink.

  8. Chocolate Covered Pretzels with Sprinkles – Paula Deen

You are bound to see some of these goodies this holiday season. Chocolate covered pretzels are a quick dessert and make for an easy small gift for those extra people on your list! With the perfect balance of sweet and salty, you may find yourself reaching for a few more. Keep the fun going while working off some of those extra calories: turn on the Nintendo Wii and go virtual skiing.

10 Things We Love About Black Friday (said no one ever)

Whether you partake in Black Friday or not, the extensive news coverage of the infamous shopping holiday sheds light on consumerism in America.

While our Scandinavian agents of goo only know it as a day “for Americans to get even more crazy about buying stuff,” and a once-a year “opportunity for businesses to hype up interest in their products with crazy low prices,” our U.S. agents are much more cynical.

Stampedes, thefts, fights and even deaths that have occurred put the black mark on Black Friday. You’ve seen it all, heard it all, and if you were smart, avoided it all!

But if you plan on braving the crowds this year, we can assure these are the top 10 things you won’t hear.

Things You’ll Never Hear On Black Friday

1. “Let’s line up 3 weeks early so we can get a new camera!” (Oh wait… that did happen).

2. “Here, you can have my spot in line, I’ll wait in the back for my friends.”

3. “Let’s give our money to the Salvation Army bell ringers instead.”

4. “They are out of shopping carts! Oh well, we can carry everything to burn off those Thanksgiving calories.”

5. “Awh how nice of that man to give up the last flat screen TV.”

6. “50% off is so not worth it, and I don’t really need it after all.”

7. “We’re not in a hurry, let’s choose the longer line so we can talk.”

8. “I’m just here for fun, not to shop; we’re focusing on the true meaning of Christmas this year and not getting sidetracked by extravagant gifts.”

9. “Oh the news is on! Let’s watch and see how peacefully everything went today. Wow, no one got trampled!”

10. And our personal favorite… “Black Friday makes me really appreciate the beauty in humanity.”

*Fun fact: Pushing a cart up and down those aisles for an hour can burn more than 250 calories. Don’t forget to carry your items to the car yourself for even more healthy calorie-burning fun.

But if you are one of those Black Friday crazed shoppers, far be it for us to stand in your way (trust me, there will be plenty of other people standing in your way shortly). Download this year’s #1 Black Friday app to get the best deals before anyone else.
