mygooi to Support Threads of Freedom & You

ToFu Empowers, Reintegrates Victims of Sex Trafficking in India

DES MOINES, Iowa (Oct. 15, 2015) Threads of Freedom & You (ToFu), a social enterprise that empowers victims of sex trafficking, creates positive futures for young women in southern India, said Paul N. Greenwood, CEO of Des Moines-based mygooi.com. He announced mygooi will be supporting ToFu’s efforts to acquaint people in and outside of India with the organization’s efforts.

ToFu (www.facebook.com/tofutribe), based in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, trains its beneficiaries to face life with confidence and skills that remove them far from the degradation earlier circumstances forced them into, says Threads of Freedom founder and CEO Pritham Raja. Our mission is simple: We give trafficked women their lives back through meaningful employment and social support. ToF trains and employs rescued women in established manufacturing firms and collaborates with these firms to produce high quality clothing that we then sell. Our mission is simple: We give trafficked women their lives back through meaningful employment and social support. ToF trains and employs rescued women in established manufacturing firms and collaborates with these firms to produce high quality clothing that we then sell.

“Typically, our beneficiaries come from impoverished circumstances and families that did not support their choices,” said Raja. He gave as an example a 23-year-old woman from Bangalore he calls Dia (not her actual name).

“Because of her family’s financial condition, Dia sought work at a garment factory near her home. There she met a boy. They decided to marry, much to the chagrin of her parents who, in response, married her to another man. She lived with her new husband for six months before she ran away and wed her lover. After they had a child, he became negligent and hurtful, so she went back to her family, only to be rejected.

“Distraught, Dia attempted suicide and was rescued by her younger brother, who took her baby home. Not having the courage to face her family, she searched for work, was tricked and forced into prostitution for two years before being rescued by Mumbai police and sent to a rehabilitation center. After again being rejected by her family, which felt dishonored by her disobedience and eventual trafficking, however unwilling, she worked odd-jobs that paid very little for over a year.

“After joining ToF’s program, she has received training and secured a well-paying job that allows her to live independently.”

Raja noted that ToF doesn’t rescue women itself; instead it partners with rescue organizations and the Karnataka state Ministry of Women and Child Development to identify beneficiaries for its program.

“Our mission is simple,” he says. “We give trafficked women their lives back through meaningful employment and social support. We train and employ rescued women in established manufacturing firms and collaborate with these firms to produce high quality clothing that we sell. Profits from the salesOur mission is simple: We give trafficked women their lives back through meaningful employment and social support. mygooi is providing ToFu with web and social media pages, building video and digital conduits to people around the world interested in fighting sex trafficking.

“We very much appreciate mygooi’s volunteering its considerable communication and programming skills on Threads of Freedom’s behalf,” Raja said.

mygooi supports Compassion Charitable Trust

DES MOINES, Iowa (Sept. 21, 2015) Compassion Charitable Trust, a not-for-profit organization based in Theni, Tamil Nadu, India, offers much needed services to individuals severely in need of support, said Paul N. Greenwood, CEO of Des Moines-based mygooi.com. He announced that mygooi is donating technical and communications support to the charity.

“The Trust is doing great work in Theni for a range of people in dire straits,” Greenwood said. “mygooi is looking forward to helping its cause.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjJD1_QJtSg)

According to the Trust, it “aims at treating and offering a hospitable environment, food and care to mentally retarded or underdeveloped individuals, individuals prone to accidents and old agers who are abandoned by their families, unable to tend to their needs on their own and roaming aimlessly in the streets. We provide them with ample medical aid from the Government Medical college Hospital and help in their rehabilitation.”

A key supporter of the Trust, Sredhanea Ramkrishnan, who brought the organization to mygooi’s attention, said, “We were all born human , but how many of us live as one?

“I found living examples of fine humanity in those who run Compassion Charitable Trust. In an age when individuals feel burdened to render care to their old and sick parents, this couple has dedicated its lives to take care of almost 50 mentally deranged and physically unfit citizens of all ages who are abandoned by their families.

“When you first set eyes on another human being , what do you notice? The color of their eyes, skin, the brand of clothes they are wearing, the height of their heel, their tone? But these 50 people (at the Trust’s poor Lazarus Rehabilitation Centre) do not care for any such thing. All that is visible to them when they look at you is your heart and the love you are capable of giving them. I am more than happy to be playing a part in the lives of such amiable souls and to be associated with this Compassion Charitable Trust.”

The Trust (https://www.facebook.com/CompassionCharitableTrust) was established in 2011 with single minded dedication to provide help for the helpless in the form of food, healthcare and shelter, among other support services.

Referring to seniors among its care population, the Trust notes, “We aim to aid the elderly who have been deserted by their families. We are here to show that seniors, too, have their right to live with dignity. Gone are the days when the first thing that fades after 60 is dignity — even before the eye sight fades. To make them feel valued, we are on a mission to extend shoulders to those who carried the rhythm of hope for generations.”

mygooi is providing Compassion Charitable Trust with web and social media pages, building video and digital conduits to people around the world interested in helping the helpless.

mygooi launches gooimusic in India with Indo-Jazz concert

Abundance of talent reinforces plans to showcase world’s musicians on music channel, says creative director Jared Freiburg

CHENNAI, India (Aug. 31, 2015) gooimusic Creative Director Jared Freiburg and top music students from APL Global School performed at ceremonies to launch, in India, gooimusic, a music channel on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/c/gooimusic).

The program, which also marked completion of a 10-day Jazz workshop conducted at the school by Freiburg for select 9- to 17-year-old students, featured four Tamil movie and music icons as Chief Guests:

  • Gangai Amaran, singer, composer, orchestra conductor. During the program, he sang in remembrance of recently deceased composer M S Viswanathan, who was responsible for the music for over 1000 movies.
  • Rajiv Menon, movie director and an expert in Indian classical music.
  • AVMK Shanmugam, music, movie and TV producer and grandson of Indian movie moghul AVM, who started the first South Indian record label in India during the 1930s.
  • Ms Suchitra, singer and disc jockey of South India’s most popular FM Station “Radio Mirchi,” who has sung in more than 100 movies.

Freiburg, dubbed by gooimusic Creative Board Chair Mohan Narayanan as a “Jazz sensation,” said, ”My trip to India – my first outside the United States – confirmed my belief in the widespread talent in musical genres all over the world. So, gooimusic will continue to seek talents and promote them so separate cultures can relate to each-other through music.”

The event included blessing the gooimusic venture and the concert by lighting two of the tall brass Indian oil lamps known as Kuthu Vilakku to drive out all bad things in and around the projects and to  bring all good things and happiness. The ceremony, Narayanan said, presents Hindu gods as light. The number of oil wicks represents the particular deity; for example a lamp with five splits of light represents Lord Shiva. Participants included the four Chief Guests, Narayanan, Freiburg, mygooi Chairman and CEO Paul N. Greenwood and gooidev President and Chief Operating Officer Steve Beaumont.

Working with Narayanan, 79, Chennai-based educator, composer and scholar on world music, the workshop created an Indo-Jazz theme song for the Indian government’s CLEAN INDIA campaign. Narayanan and Freiburg worked on the melody in Mohan’s 128 track digital midi studio, the first of its kind in Chennai. The lyrics in Tamil, the regional language of Chennai, were penned by Narayanan, who has many movie lyrics to his credit.

At the concert, Narayanan read a poem about Clean India written by Greenwood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwiVOZ3gzf4).

Freiburg said the workshop, which lasted two-hours a day for 10 days, was a great experience for him to learn as well as to display jazz opportunities to the students at APL Global. Freiburg said, “The best part for me was seeing some of their faces light up when they either heard jazz for the first time or made a connection to jazz’s relation to other popular genres like blues, rock and funk.” He taught the specially selected students the essentials of jazz while learning more about classic Indian musical themes.

“The music professionals I met had very kind compliments about the concert and seemed to enjoy it very much,” said Freiburg. “I see collaboration in the future.”

Freiburg, of Des Moines, Iowa, USA, is studying music education and performance at California State University, Long Beach.

Think how India has changed!

Check out mygooi CEO, Paul Greenwood’s poem in support of the Clean India campaign. The poem is read by Dr. Mohan Narayanan, Chennai.

Think how India has changed!

When millions of people act for a common cause, united together in a fresh collaborative mission, streets become cleaned, houses, yards and driveways cease to be piled with dust and dirt.

The vision to make a country proud and responsible for its own housekeeping, literally sweeps aside a past where dirt was always somebody else’s problem.

In this new world of joint responsibility, sweeping clean is a philosophy. The outcome is a cleaner India; happier faces on the children and many brooms being pushed by so many more hands.

It’s now every day, it’s the new norm – CLEAN IS EVERYWHERE! And Clean is India!

Creative Director Jared Freiburg, Advisory Board Chair Mohan Narayanan to headline program launching innovative music channel in India

“I’m looking forward to teaching these select students the essentials of Jazz, while learning more about India’s music,” said Freiburg.

According to Narayanan, a composer who is expert in musical themes from all over the world, Freiburg will also be meeting with leading South Indian classical musicians to discuss their music and the challenges of combining tonal elements from Asia, Europe, America and other parts of the world.

When Freiburg was named gooimusic creative director, he expressed particular interest in fusing traditional Indian music with Jazz, giving well-known Indian themes a more modern twist.

Narayanan said the APL Global School in the Thoraipakkam area of Chennai has selected a dozen students for the workshop, which will run at the school for two hours daily after regular classes. He said, “At the end of the workshop, Jared and I, along with the students, will have created a new Indo-Jazz theme song for the Indian Government’s CLEAN INDIA campaign. The theme song and other pieces will be performed by Jared and the students.”

The theme for the national campaign will be recorded and sent to the Indian Prime Minister’s Office as well as posted on mygooi’s facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mygooi) and on gooimusic. Narayanan said, “I have already started composing the song’s elements and am also writing the lyrics, which will be in the local Indian language, Tamil. It can later be translated into other major Indian languages.”
